故事由她与胞姊梅爱芳在孩童时于荔园卖唱及巧遇郑少秋开始，及后得黎小田赏识，赢得无线电视与华星唱片合办的第一届新秀歌唱比赛后与华星签约。有一次因为前辈失场，她自荐顶替到夜总会表演，为她与张国荣第一次同台演出，张国荣则因为选错歌而未能令听众投入，梅艳芳在尖东维港岸边安慰他，承诺日后谁在红馆开演唱会，对方都要当嘉宾，而且不准收费。日籍歌手后藤夕辉访港，二人一见钟情，但有一次二人在旧式日本旅馆度假，后藤的社长赶至与他争吵，躲在衣柜里的梅艳芳用录音机录下对话翻译成中文，知道后藤的难处，恋情最后无疾而终。回港后有导演找她拍《胭脂扣》，问她想谁当男主角，她第一时间回答：“张国荣”。《胭脂扣》为她带来金马奖的荣誉。有一次与朋友于夜场庆祝生日，期间黑帮头目欲邀请她献唱被她拒绝，黑帮头目盛怒下搧了她一巴。梅艳芳因而避走泰国清迈，并且在那里与当时的男朋友林国斌共渡了大半年的光景，后与林国斌分手并返回香港。从此她志力公益，为流浪者派饭，亦到中国大陆筹建义学[4]。梅爱芳得子宫癌逝世，随后不久她亦得此病。张国荣因情绪病于文华酒店跳楼身亡。梅艳芳到日本见后藤最后一面，后返港接受化疗。她著刘培基为她设计婚纱，举行最后一次演唱会，并作嫁给舞台的决心。演唱会后四十五日，梅艳芳去世，终年40岁。
